Ecuador Trek – Cotopaxi & Illinizas

A trek that traverses the most spectacular landscapes and mountain scenery in Ecuador. Most of the highest peaks of the famous Volcanoes Avenue will be viewed during the trek.
Day 1. Quito - Pasochoa
We depart from Quito in the direction of Volcano Pasochoa, where your trekking begins. As we walk up towards it summit at 4200m, we will enjoy the fabulous views of neighbouring peaks such as Antisana, Rumiñahui and Cotopaxi which present their best profile.. We will start to head south on a easy going trail along the crater edge of this extinct volcano. Condors and other birds of pray are often seen before we begin our descent into a green valley where dinner will be waiting. Camping night.
Day 2. Pasochoa - Limpiopungo, base of the Cotopaxi Volcano
Today our walk is rather flat as we head towards the Cotopaxi National Park and explore its northern boundaries. We will visit the Pre-Inca ruins of El Salitre while enjoying magnificent views of the Cotopaxi glaciers. After, we will continue towards Limpiopungo valley and lake, before reaching our campsite located in the middle of Cotopaxi and Rumiñahui volcanoes. Dinner and overnight in the campsite.
Day 3. Climb Rumiñahui - Limpiopungo Lake
Today is the longest day of our trekking tour. We will walk along an undualitng trail and following the flanks of Rumiñahui peak and at the same time observing birds of prey. In the horizon, you will witness the mighty Chimborazo and Illinizas peaks before reaching your campsite in the western boundary of the National Park. Dinner and overnight in the campsite.
Day 4. Cotopaxi national Park - Illinizas Ecological Reserve
After breakfast we will keep on our trail and leave the Cotopaxi Park to pass by the old rail road station. Following in a westerly direction, we will traverse some farms as well as wooded areas, observing the locals working. We will eventually reach our old Hacienda at the base of the Ilinizas Peak. Overnight at the Hacienda.
Day 5. Climb Illiniza North or Corazón - return to Quito
Today we can either drive in our 4x4 vehicle to the parking place and walk up hill to the settle of Illinizas and summit the North peak (non technical) and recommended for those who will attempt Cotopaxi; or we may continue our trekking up the hills in a westerly direction along the slopes of the Corazon peak. Transfer back to Quito. |
